Mathematics in Industry Information Service

This website is dedicated to news about Mathematics in Industry. It has a particular focus on Study Groups with Industry which are an internationally recognised method of technology transfer between academic mathematicians and industry. These week long workshops, which were initiated in Oxford in 1968, provide a forum for industrial scientists to work alongside academic mathematicians on problems of direct industrial relevance.

The success of the Study Groups' unique format, which uses problems presented by industry as a basis for mathematical research, is demonstrated by the extent to which it has been copied around the world and is now extending into other areas where mathematics may be applied.

This website also provides a repository of much of the information generated by these meetings including the detailed reports of problems from over 60 meetings.

Following the OECD reports on Mathematics in Industry (2008) and Mechanisms for Promoting Mathematics in Industry (2009), it has been decided to expand the data held on this website to include information about Research Centres, Networks, Training and Conferences. This information has initially been garnered from the OECD reports but it is hoped that it will become a more complete record as time goes on. To this end, we welcome input from visitors through email to miis (at) maths.ox.ac.uk or through the comments box below.
